Curious about hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and what it feels like to be inside the chamber? At Sports Performance Physical Therapy, we’ve received plenty of questions about the HBOT experience. Here’s a detailed walkthrough of a session, what to expect, and the benefits you can gain from it.
Preparing for Your HBOT Session
When you arrive for your session, preparation is straightforward. After removing your shoes and organizing your belongings, you’ll step into the chamber. While the process of getting in may feel a bit snug initially, the setup ensures your comfort once inside. You’ll have the option to either sit upright in a chair (ideal for working or reading) or recline if you prefer to relax or sleep.
Inside the Chamber
Once you’re inside, the chamber is pressurized to 30 kPa, a measure of pressure that ensures optimal oxygen absorption. You’ll notice plenty of space inside—no need to worry about feeling claustrophobic. An adjustable lever allows you to control the pressure to your comfort level, and oxygen is delivered through a connected system that keeps the environment cool and comfortable.
How to Spend Your Time
HBOT sessions provide a unique opportunity for productivity or relaxation. During your session, which can last 30, 60, or 90 minutes, you can:
- Meditate or relax.
- Read a book.
- Get work done on a laptop.
- Scroll through social media or catch up on messages.
- Simply rest and recharge.
Why People Choose HBOT
People come to HBOT sessions for a variety of reasons, typically falling into three main categories:
- Medical Needs: Managing health challenges or medical conditions that benefit from enhanced oxygen levels.
- Performance Enhancement: Athletes preparing for events or competitions rely on HBOT for optimal recovery and readiness.
- Wellness and Anti-Aging: Many use HBOT to recover faster, reduce stiffness, and prevent future injuries.
The Depressurization Process
At the end of the session, the chamber is gradually depressurized over five to ten minutes. This step is carefully controlled to ensure comfort, much like a plane descending to land. If you’re new to HBOT, your ears may feel some pressure initially, but this typically eases with repeated sessions.
Post-Session Benefits
After your first session, you may feel slightly foggy or off, similar to adjusting to altitude changes. However, many clients report waking up the next day with significant benefits, such as:
- Increased energy and mental clarity.
- Improved recovery from workouts, with less stiffness and soreness.
- Enhanced mobility and an overall sense of feeling rejuvenated.
Frequency and Results
Consistency is key to achieving the best results. While a single session can provide some benefits, regular treatments amplify the effects. We recommend:
- 2–3 sessions per week for 6–8 weeks for sustained results.
- 5 sessions per week for those seeking accelerated benefits, especially for performance or wellness goals.
